The Bentley Continental GT’s roaring engine, its sleek design, and its hand built wood-and-leather interior belies the car’s core task: To take this sumptuous brand downmarket.

A snip at £110,000, the Continental GT will be much cheaper than traditional Bentleys when it goes on sale in its home market this month.

Consequently, the car will be up against the likes of Aston Martin’s four seat DB9, due to be launched in Frankfurt this week, and Ferrari’s forthcoming four seat supercar, expected to be named 460 GT, rather than serious luxury cars like the Maybach and Rolls-Royce.

The car is expected to do well.

Four-wheel drive grip and acceleration to die for makes cruising along Welsh mountain roads feel like a flight in an executive jet: smooth, comfortable, fast, exhilarating.

Bargain

Brad Wernle, who covers the car industry for Automotive News Europe, is impressed.

“I suppose the Bentley [Continental GT] looks like a bargain,” says Mr Wernle, BBC News Online’s co-pilot during a test drive.

Bentley’s chief executive, Franz-Josef Paefgen, is keen to explain why.

“If you go downmarket a little bit, off course the average wealth of the customers you talk to is a little less than the traditional customers.

“This segment would have slightly younger - not young but younger - customers, and we also hope to talk to a lot more female potential customers with this car.”

Bigger market

Bentley’s traditional customers are not only phenomenally wealthy.

Mr Tennant: “Volkswagen is not doing this as a hobby”.

They are also scarce.

Globally, there are only about 80,000 people with more than $20m-worth of net investable assets, according to Cap Gemini Ernst & Young’s World Wealth Report 2002.

By comparison, there are as many as one-and-a-half million people who have net investable assets in excess of $3m.

It is this group that Bentley sees as its new potential customers.

Racing car

But, acknowledges Mark Tennant, Bentley’s director of marketing product strategy: Selling cars to rich, successful 40-somethings is not a joking matter, at least not when your company is viewed as “very British, very conservative, very Establishment”.

To get around such prejudices about the marque, Bentley has decided to play the heritage card.

Its marketing strategy is based on Bentley’s past as a racing brand during the 1920s.

“We are going forward to our roots,” says Dr Paefgen cryptically, noting that Bentley is back in the racing circuit, having won Le Mans earlier this summer.

Strong demand

And, looking ahead, the car is set to win a few hearts too.

During our drive across North Wales, this four-seat Grand Tourer performed like a Ferrari and turned even more heads.

Even the hard-nosed motoring press is drooling over it, with Car magazine screaming: “The Bentley Continental GT, friends, is a lot more than good. It’s brilliant.”

So there is no surprise that demand for the car is strong.

“We already have a 12-month order book,” says Mark Tennant, Bentley’s director of marketing product strategy.

Volkswagen parts

One reason for this could be the car’s relatively low price.

Bentley, which is owned by the German automotive group Volkswagen, has managed to curb costs from soaring by cherry picking parts from other luxury cars within the group.

“The car shares a number of underlying components with the Volkswagen Phaeton, so some of the cost is shared and not borne entirely by this car alone,” explains Mr Wernle.

“That makes it more economically feasible.

“In the current automotive environment, more companies are sharing their components, and the key is to do it in a clever way and preserve the integrity of the brand, which I feel Bentley has done in this case.”

Large potential

Indeed, the Continental GT will be Bentley’s first ever mass produced car - though the numbers churned out will remain very low when compared with true mass market vehicles.

Dr Paefgen: “We are going forward to our roots”.

Next year, about 3,500 Continentals will leave the Bentley factory in Crewe, Cheshire.

But over time, this number is set to more than double.

“The total potential of the plant is as much as 9,000 per year,” says Dr Paefgen, referring to plans to produce a four-door version of the Continental GT and possibly even a third version of the car in the years ahead.

And soon, these new Bentleys should bring benefits for the parent company too.

“I can assure you that Volkswagen is not doing this as a hobby. It produces a very decent commercial return for them,” insists Mr Tennant.

PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE 2007

On the immaculate lawns of the famous Pebble Beach golf course, an estimated 20,000 visitors gathered in mid-August to admire the rare, the fabulous and the seminal machinery on display. This year’s featured marques were Auburn, Duesenberg, Cord and Aston Martin. Fittingly, the coveted “Best of Show” award went to the “Mormon Meteor,”, a 1935 Duesenberg Special owned by Harry Yeaggy. “Old Number 2,” the 1930 works racing Bentley Speed Six featured in issues 21 and 22 of Bentley Magazine also received a special award: the Tony Hulman Trophy. This award is sponsored by Indianapolis Motor Speedway and honors “the most significant open wheel race car present.” The Speed Six fetched a world record $5.1 million for a Bentley at Christie’s auction in July 2004. BENTLEY BROOKLANDS LAUNCH

The evening before the official North American debut of the Bentley Brooklands at the 2007 New York Auto Show, Bentley staged an exclusive lifestyle event for media, prospective customers and key opinion forming leaders from luxury brands across multiple industries. The Bentley Brooklands is a stunning new model that marks the company’s return to the luxury coupe market and reaffirms its reputation as creator of the world’s most exclusive coupes. It is the ultimate Bentley: a stylish, four-seat, grand touring coupe with classic British proportions and muscular performance.

Bentley’s chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen describes the motivation behind the new coupe: “Bentley’s proud sporting pedigree, forged by the exploits of the immortal ‘Bentley Boys’ on the famous Brooklands* racetrack in the 1920s, was the inspiration for our new coupe, capturing all the style, power and splendour of that era.”

Sporting design cues are matched by the phenomenal performance engineering of Bentley’s legendary Crewe-built V8 engine. The new Bentley Brooklands possesses the most powerful V8 the company has ever produced – a 530 bhp, twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter unit that also produces a prodigious 775 lb-ft of torque.

Each Brooklands coupe will be hand-assembled, employing traditional coach-building techniques and the craftsmanship skills in wood veneer and leather hide for which Bentley is renowned. To ensure exclusivity, lifetime production will be strictly limited to just 550 cars, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2008.

Exterior Design: Classic British Proportions

Bentley’s rich coupe heritage provided the stimulus for Director of Styling, Dirk van Braeckel and his design team. For van Braeckel, the task was very clear: “To create a powerful, muscular and rakish grand touring coupe with classic British proportions, in the finest Bentley tradition.”

While the new Brooklands is influenced by Bentley’s fine coupe lineage, its design and engineering are thoroughly contemporary. The proportions of long bonnet, short front overhang and long rear overhang achieve the design objective perfectly, while the low roofline, steeply raked screens and pillarless side glass convey both power and movement.

As the Brooklands will be built in very limited volume, the designers were able to introduce unique features that necessitate specialist coach-building techniques, as Programme Director, Ashley Wickham, reveals: “The Brooklands’ beautiful flowing lines are testament to the traditional coach-building skills and craftsmanship of Crewe’s highly talented workforce.”

Peerless Craftsmanship with a Sporting Character in the Interior Design

As in every Bentley, peerless craftsmanship is to the fore, enhanced by the warmth and richness of the finest natural materials. To tailor for their individual requirements, customers may choose from an extensive palette of hides, veneers, carpet tones and seat belt colors.

Its four-seat architecture and deeply bolstered seats lend the Brooklands’ interior a distinctly sporting atmosphere, complemented by design accents such as aluminum foot pedals and footrest. A new, single-piece, hide-trimmed roof lining flows uninterrupted from the front windscreen all the way to the rear of the car, mirroring the long, sleek profile of the elegant exterior.

The interior designers sought to offer the very highest levels of comfort and legroom, in true Bentley grand touring tradition, while the pillarless window design enhances the feeling of space.

Most Powerful Crewe-built V8 Ever

Beneath its muscular, rakish, coach-built body lies the most powerful Crewe-builtV8 engine ever produced, developing 530 bhp. Maximum torque is an astonishing 775 lb-ft, the highest ever developed by a production V8 engine. Although performance figures are subject to final confirmation as part of the on-going development program, the new Bentley coupe will deliver supercar levels of in-gear acceleration combined with Arnage refinement.

At the beginning of the project, Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, Member of the Board, Engineering, tasked his power train specialists to deliver an extraordinary driving experience in the Bentley coupe tradition: “Exhilarating, effortless, accessible performance for those truly passionate about their driving was our prime objective.”

As with the latest Arnage, the V8 engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with strengthened casing that transforms the way in which both parts of the drive train communicate. A sophisticated, locking torque converter and ESP system ensure that the driver can readily access the prodigious power. A semi-automatic function allows manual gear selection for even greater driver control.

*The challenging Brooklands banked racetrack, which this year celebrates its centenary, was the birthplace of British motor racing. During the 1920s and early thirties, Brooklands, located in Surrey, England, was the scene of some of Bentley’s greatest racing triumphs, forging an inextricable link between the company’s motorsport heritage and this historic race circuit.
